The Friends of the California State University, Sacramento Library is a volunteer support group. Its members recognize that the Library is the heart of the University and is essential to its educational mission and to the community at large.
The Friends raise money for materials, equipment and services for the Library through membership dues, book sales, fund-raising events and encouragement of gifts of all kinds to the Library.
The Friends sponsor activities and events to promote awareness of the Library's collections,
resources, and services to the community and to the University.
Staff Member of the Month
Lisa Van Handel-Lane
My name is Lisa Van Handel-Lane. You've probably seen me working at the front desk on the main floor in the Library. I started working here as a Student Assistant in Fall 1978. In 1984, while working on my M.A. in Art, I was hired as half-time Assistant Weekend Supervisor in Circulation. Later I was hired as hourly intermittent Assistant Night Supervisor, and eventually I started working full time days.
In Circulation, I supervised Student Assistants for 20 years, which was my favorite job over all the time I've worked in the Library. I also worked at the Circulation Desk, and for several years I was in charge of Campus Services/Library Cards and of Circulation Accounting. In 2005, I started working in the Reserve Book Room, where I oversaw Electronic Reserves. I supervised the scanning of materials for professors, adding electronic articles and books to Course Reserves, and ensured copyright compliance and accessibility.
In 2010, the Library consolidated Circulation, Course Reserves, Interlibrary Loan, Stacks Maintenance, and Mailroom/Receiving, and added Laptop Checkout and E-Learning Services, all into one department called User Services. I became one of two LA IIIs in User Services, and became responsible, along with seven other Staff and one Librarian, for learning and performing functions in all of these areas.
I’ve had the opportunity to use my art background in my capacity as a Library employee by serving on the Library Exhibits Committee and as chair of the U.S. Olympic Track and Field Trials Exhibits Committee in 1999-2000. Soon I will also be helping with Library signs and brochures. But mostly I’ve pursued my professional activities as an artist outside of the Library, maintaining a studio and continuing to exhibit my work. In recent years, I was in a two person show at Axis Gallery in 2009, a two person show at Gallery W in 2012, and a number of group exhibits.
I have also been teaching art classes to teenagers in the Juvenile Justice system since 2005 at the Sacramento Assessment Center and at Juvenile Hall, through the Juvenile Justice Chaplaincy program. In 2007 I received an Outstanding Volunteer Service Award for teaching the classes. In 2010, I coordinated an exhibit of the students’ work in the Library Gallery Annex, which was funded in part by a grant from the Sacramento Metropolitan Arts Commission, and was reviewed in an article in the CSUS State Hornet: http://www.statehornet.com/artwork-by-teenagers-in-the-juvenile-justice-system-exhibited-on/article_d6505149-3aa2-55f9-ad39-f332d17837fa.html And in 2012, I installed another exhibit of art from these classes at Gallery W. I would like to thank Charles Martell and the Friends of the Library for asking me to be the staff member spotlighted in this Newsletter. It’s an unexpected honor that I very much appreciate.
